Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!

Psalm 34:8

Christmas and food are like love and marriage: two peas in a pod. CNN has reported that the average North American adult can gain 7-10 pounds during the Christmas season. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could gain twelve to fifteen verses in our minds to meditate on during the holidays? Most people will say they can’t memorize scripture or meditate on it very well. You know what? You can do it! You can do it through Christ! It may be hard, but when we have to work at something, we enjoy the result more. It may take a lot of time, but what a great way to use some of our down time. Start today with this simple but profound verse. Write it on a piece of paper or three-by-five card and carry it around with you. Read it and think about it while on the bus or at lunchtime. Tape it to your car dashboard to remind you of it while you’re driving. There are many ways you can do this! You have your own personal tutor, the Spirit! It is His job to help you with scripture. He will help you remember it, and He will bring it back to mind when it’s time for you to glorify God! You are the conduit for His power. With meditating on scripture, you are in the process of transforming your heart and mind and life!

Thirteenth-Day Activities: Ways to Mediate and Memorize

Psalm 119:52 tells us, “I meditate on your age-old regulations; O Lord, they comfort me.” Here are some ideas to get you started.

Write out on a three-by-five card a verse that has special meaning for you. Think about what makes it special for you, what words seep into your heart, and how God would want you to live this scripture. Carry it with you for the day, reading it often. With your children, ask them for a verse they may already like and help them write it out, talking to them about the verse throughout the day. At day’s end, place the verse in a three-by-five cardholder. The next day start with a new verse, carrying it with you the whole day. Also a few times a day, take the verse from the day before and read it. Continue reading the older verses each day until you have them committed to memory. You can then place them in the back of the file box to review once a week and then once a month. It’s not the object to memorize the most verses. We need to have the scripture ready in our minds for when the Spirit will request us to quote the verse. He will draw it back to mind when He needs it.

If you are a more visual learner, try writing the verse numerous times until it becomes written in your mind. For those with children, work with them to make up a song you can all sing to memorize. Remember that scripture should be a joy to our hearts, not a duty to our brains!
