Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind the LORD your God of His covenant with you. I AM the LORD your God.”
Numbers 10:10 NLT
If you decide to read through Leviticus and Numbers, you will find time and time again the statement, ‘I AM the LORD your God’. There are times it seems to be the end statement of every verse.
You must obey all my regulations and be careful to obey my decrees, for I AM the LORD your God. Leviticus 18:4
Do not permit any of your children to be offered as a sacrifice to Molech, for you must not bring shame on the name of your God. I AM the LORD. Leviticus 18:21
Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I AM the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:3
If you obey my decrees and my regulations, you will find life through them. I AM the LORD. Leviticus 18:5
“Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I AM the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:4
Do you have any thoughts as to why He kept repeating Himself? Could it be that the Israelites need to be reminded often that He was God?
Remember, the nation had just been released from slavery, 400 years of slavery. They had been told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Now they were on their own. They were like children that needed to be taught all over again. That’s why I think God had to keep repeating to them that He was God.
Fast forward a few thousand years and here we are today. Could this repetition be just as much needed for us? We may not be in physical slavery, but we can be a slave to our society. Jesus has set us free from spiritual slavery, so do we need to be reminded at every turn that He is God?
I know I want that reminding. I want to be reminded when I wake up that Jesus is mine. When I work and play I want to know He is with me. As I sleep, I rest secure knowing He is God.
How are we going to go about today, to be reminded that He is the LORD our God? I always like sticky notes. Placing them around with His name on them or just the words: ‘Remember’ will remind me He is my LORD. I’ve been known to place them on the mirror, my breakfast cereal box, the dashboard of my car, wherever I might look throughout a day.
I also like cell phone reminders. I can set them every morning for different times during the day to refocus on Jesus. Just hearing the sound will bring me back to Him.
So be encourage, repetition doesn’t mean you don’t get it. It means you’re human and need reminding. If the Israelites needed to be reminded when they had the cloud of smoke and pillar of fire right in front of them, then we are no different. Go through your day with the thought ‘He is the LORD your God’ placed securely in your heart!
Jesus,
I am so glad You are my God. You nurture and guide me through this life as no other can. You always know just what I need and are so pleased to provide it for me.
I want to serve You today with joy in my heart. Please help me to remember, You are my LORD and God, and I will give You the glory of my love!
Amen
