Morning and Evening Sacrifices

“Say to the people: This is the special gift you must present to the LORD as your daily burnt offering. You must offer two one-year-old male lambs with no defects. Sacrifice one lamb in the morning and the other in the evening.
Numbers 28:3-4 NLT

Our God is a God of details. As you read through Leviticus and Numbers you begin to see that He is a very specific, detail orientated God. His instructions to the Israelites are amazingly precise.

During their time in the wilderness, He tells them how to move, when to move and in what order they are to move.

He gives instructions on what is a sin and how it is to be handled.

He tells them exactly what to do with their offerings and sacrifices, giving them step by step directions.

What I find amazing is how often they are to give these offerings and sacrifices.

The daily burnt offering in the scripture today gives the detail of the offering and when they are to be done, one lamb in the morning and the other in the evening. Did you notice how often this was to be done? Your daily burnt offering.

This offering would have been in addition to the sin offerings and sacrifices. Day in and day out they would have been required to give this offering.

My question is: between the daily burnt offering and the sin offerings (of which I would have many to give), how did they get anything else done?

I am a sinner, with or without intention of committing the sin, I still miss the mark many times through the day. I will shoot up a quick prayer asking for forgiveness and carry on. If I had lived during this time, I would have been at the Temple offering sacrifices all day long!

Why do you think God required them to give the daily burnt offerings? One for the morning and one for the evening.

As I thought about this scripture, what came to mind was that God wanted to ‘be in their face’. He wanted them to be focused on Him through the day.

He had shown them amazing miracles as they were brought out of Egypt. He had provided for them in the wilderness. Yet they were quick to forget. They were constantly complaining about no water, no meat, no protection.

So I ask: am I any different than the Israelites were? I don’t think so. I can go through a day and see my LORD working not only in my life, but in the lives of those around me. Yet when something difficult comes along, I forget all all His miracles in my life and focus on my difficulty. I still need to have God ‘in my face’ so I will remember Him.

How will I go about staying focused on Him today? First and foremost, I must ask Him to keep me focused. I can choose a scripture to memorize and think on it through the day. I can listen to great Christian songs. Whatever I choose to do, I must be intentional.

What are you going to do today to keep God ‘in your face’? I pray each one of you will have something special that will draw you closer to Him. Lent is all about walking closer with Jesus. Take His hand today and just be.

Jesus,
there are times I don’t understand why You want me. I hurt and break Your heart often during the day. I know I’m a sinner, and I also know I need a Redeemer. I desperately need You.

Please help me find a special way that I can keep You in the front of my mind. I want my eyes focused on You today. I desire to know You as I never have before!
I love You so much Jesus!
Amen
