Procrastination

Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do. Proverbs 6:4 NLT

Does the scripture this morning sound familiar? We all like to wait until the last minute to do certain activities. Somewhere in our day there will be something that sneaks up on us and we will wait until the very last minute to do it.

Some of us will put off thinking about what’s for dinner until it’s too late to fix and we have to go out for dinner.
Some of us will put off going to the grocery store until there is nothing left in the refrigerator and we have to go out for dinner. Some of us will put off cleaning house until the dining room table is so deep we can’t see the top and we have to go out for dinner.

Do you see where I’m going? I’m not the cooking, shopping, cleaning type of person. There are so many other things to do with life, but those things are very important to life.

So is being with our Jesus.

You get up late and have to hurry to work, so you will talk to Jesus later on your break.
There is no break, you have to meet that deadline, you will talk to Him at lunch.

You work through the lunch hour, eating at your desk, you will talk to Him on your way home.
The traffic is horrible and it takes all you have to maneuver through the maze, you will talk to Him at dinner.

The kids are excited about what they learned at school, the dishes need to be done, bed readied, you will talk to Him as you fall asleep.
Your head hits the bed and you’re gone, and so is another day.

All this is important to your life, but being with Jesus every day is life itself! We are a hurry-up society. We are bombarded with all the things we ‘deserve’, so it makes us need to work more hours for more money to buy them. We have obligations to meet that were due last week. It’s July when we think it should still be January. We need to slow down and breathe in the life God designed us to be. That life is with Him.

I know it’s hard to make time for Jesus, but it’s an intentional decision that only you can make. He will start with whatever time you devote to Him and He will develop it into a wonderful relationship. He doesn’t require you to start with 30 or 40 or 60 minutes a day. He will take what you give. He will meet you where you are, but know He will never leave you there. So as you take another step towards the cross, ask Jesus to be a part of your life, your everyday life.

Don’t put off committing to spending time with Jesus. As the scripture tells us, just do it and don’t rest until you do!

Jesus,
I am so sorry for the times I rush through things without You. I forget that You would like to be with me when I choose what’s for dinner. You are willing to accompany me to the grocery store. You want to show me daily what decisions to make and which direction to go. I’m not as good at commitment as I would like to be, LORD, but I do want You in my life, all my life. Show me where and how I can be with You, even if it’s only a moment or two. I want to know You and be with You always.
Amen
