One day Jesus left the crowds to pray alone. Only His disciples were with Him, and He asked them, “Who do people say I am?” “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other ancient prophets risen from the dead.” Then He asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah sent from God!” Luke 8:18-29 NLT
What a great question: Who do you say I AM?
To the twelve, Jesus was a really great guy, captivating speaker, miracle worker, spoke to the people in their language, not in the religion-eze of the Pharisees.
He came from a podunk village, His parents were common folk. Was He a handsome man? Was He tall and manly? Probably not, He was just another guy around town.
His twelve closest friends were regular guys also and they mingled with the crowds that followed Jesus.
So Jesus asked, who do the people say I am?
The twelve had a variety of answers; good, they had been listening.
Then Jesus asks the big question: who do YOU say I AM? Only Peter was given the insight to know He was the Messiah, sent from God.
Now I’ll ask a question: who is Jesus to you?
Do you know Him? Do you spend time with Him? Do you introduce Him to your friends and family?
Do you want to get to know Him?
Jesus came to this world to be known. He desires to be the center of your life. He wants you to tell others about Him.
His time was getting short on this earth. It is imperative that the word gets out. He started with His twelve ordinary guys and asked them to change the world.
He also is asking you to change the world in your own space. However, to change the world for Him, you first have to know who He is. You have to know what He’s talking about. You have to feel what He’s feeling. You have to take Him into your life and let Him grow.
As you take another step with Jesus to the cross, do you hear Him asking you to spread the word about Him? Or are you hearing His call to come and know Him more? Wherever you are, He wants you to know and experience Him.
Who do you say He is?
Oh Jesus,
I know I am lost without You as my guide. I know I break Your heart so many times a day with my choices and actions. I ask that You will forgive me, that You will strengthen me with Your Spirit, so I can be stronger in this world. I know You are my Messiah, my Savior and I do want to get to know You better each day. Please walk with me now, I ask for Your wisdom and insights as I read Your Word. When You ask, Who do people say I AM, I want proclaim, You are the Messiah, the Son of God! How I love You and want to glorify You today.
Amen
