“You are worthy, O LORD our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For You created all things, and they exist because You created what You pleased.” Revelation 4:11 NLT
I love animals, almost all of them. I will admit that some animals I want to keep outside my house and in their own surroundings.
I grew up in an area where bob cats were normal in the back yard, along with coyotes, rattle snakes, fox and skunks.
I found them all fascinating except one: the skunk, and we had a lot of them.
I’ve always wondered just why God made them. I know they are cute, but they smell. They are garbage eaters, scavengers and just plain annoying. So I’ve always commented that when I get to heaven, that will be among the first questions I have for God. Why did You create skunks?
I don’t have to wait until heaven, I got my answer.
I walk every morning. I generally enjoy the walks, however, in June, July and August in Tucson it’s very humid and even at 6 a.m. the temperatures can be well into the 80’s and the humidity 70% or more. So to help take my mind off the weather, I take scripture that I’ve written out on a 3×5 card to memorize and think about while I walk.
One morning a few years ago, I didn’t have a scripture ready, so I just went to my file box and grabbed one, knowing I had already memorized it but thought it would be a good review.
It was Revelation 4:11. NLT
“You are worthy, O LORD our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For You created all things, and they exist because You created what You pleased.”
As I walked that morning, God revealed to me exactly why He made the skunk. Because they please Him. That’s all, there needs to be no other explanation, He enjoys them.
Then another question came to my mind. Does He enjoy me? I may be cute, but my sin still makes me stinky. My words can be more damaging than a skunk can be with his scavenging. My actions can be viewed much like the garbage the skunk rummages through.
I realize now that God created the skunk because it pleased Him. He created me for the same reason. The skunk may not be conscience of His creator, but I am. I was created in His image and should please Him with my life. But do I?
As we come closer to the cross today, stop and ask Him to reveal anything that may be unpleasing in your life to Him. No matter how hard we try, we will still have the smelly things in our lives. Spend some time with Jesus this morning and let Him cleanse you.
You were created to be enjoyed by God. He is pleased to have created you!
Father,
Please forgive me for the many times I break Your heart. Please forgive me for doubting Your creation and all that it holds. I want so much to bring a smile to Your face and joy to Your heart. Show me how I can do that today. Let me walk with You, learn from Your Word and know that You are pleased with my life…I love You LORD!
Amen
